Présentation
On a mountainside in the Pyrenées, accessible only via a footpath, Wolfgang Laib realized a fascinating project in the summer of the year 2000. Opposite the Pic du Canigou, the holy mountain of the Catalonians and the last high peak before the Mediterranean, Laib had a rock chamber chiselled out of granite. He then lined the walls of this amorphous chamber with a smooth, seamless ’skin’ made from beeswax. This spiritual room may only be reached after a good hike, not unlike a pilgrimage. A simple wooden door, the only opening, leads into a place of highest concentration and clarity, a last place. Inside the earth, in a space which seems naturally grown and beyond the times, visitors are confronted in a sublime way with nature and their very relationship to it. Wolfgang Laib has used what nature provided him with and has fully returned it.
The book, designed by the artist and illustrated with his own photographs, gives an idea of the deep impressions left by the lonely landscape and the work of art immersed in it.
