Walter Niedermayr / Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa / SANAA

Ce volume grand format est le premier à documenter la longue collaboration entre le photographe italien Walter Niedermayr (né en 1952) et les architectes tokyoïtes Kazuyo Sejima (né en 1956) et Ryue Nishizawa (né en 1966), qui travaillent sous le nom de SANAA.

Niedermayr est connu dans le monde entier pour ses photographies de clairs paysages alpins, tandis que SANAA est célèbre pour les effets minimalistes et éphémères de ses bâtiments. Chacun dans leur discipline, ils poursuivent une approche artistique abstraite pour étudier l’architecture et l’espace selon leur coexistence, leurs strates et leur construction.

L’architecture de SANAA et les photographies de celle-ci évitent l’écueil du sensationnalisme et du drame. En revanche, elles aident le spectateur à développer sa compréhension de l’architecture, des éléments essentiels de l’espace, et de la relativité du visible.

Ce catalogue est publié à l’occasion de l’exposition «Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa / SANAA & Walter Niedermayr», qui a lieu au deSingel, international arts centre, d’Anvers, du 15 février au 6 juin 2007, puis à arc-en-rêve, centre d’architecture, à Bordeaux, du 7 juin au 28 octobre 2007.

«Over the last few years, Niedermayr has photographed several projects by SANAA for his own aesthetic reasons. He first came to the attention of Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa thanks to his «abstract» alpine landscapes, passageways, and building structures. Although there is, strictly speaking, no direct collaboration between the photographer and the architects, and the latter do not direct the activity of the former, their mutual appreciation and respect, and their fascination for each other’s profession, have grown to such an extent that a symbiotic, almost spiritual mutual understanding has come to exist between them.
On the occasion of the exhibition and this book, this special dialogue between the architects and the photographer was enhanced even further by a third party, the graphic designers Armand Mevis and Linda van Deursen. In their unique design, they attempt to combine the essence of an architectural book with that of a photographic one. The result is a hybrid «book within a book», which allows associations between the two artistic media to emerge, and which emphasizes the ephemeral nature of both SANAA and Niedermayr’s work.»
