Né en 1950 à Metzingen (Allemagne). Vit et travaille en Allemagne.
Wolfgang Laib est diplomé de l’université de médecine de Tübingen (1968 – 1974).
Depuis 1974, il se consacre exclusivement à son travail artistique. Il a réalisé sa première pierre de lait en 1975; il a collecté son premier pollen en 1977; il a commencé ses premiers travaux avec du riz en 1983.
